Case Study: Solving a parking access challenge for Coffs Harbour education campus

Cost-effective solution with rapid installation from PARCsafe

The client

The Coffs Harbour education campus – home to a university, TAFE NSW campus, and secondary college – had a parking access challenge. The area of their carpark specifically allocated to executive staff and visitors was routinely being accessed by students, which meant that even though there were 125 parks available, there often wasn’t enough vacant space for critical staff.

The campus had recently installed some Electrical Vehicle (EV) charging stations, which they also needed to control access to. A further complication was the need for a solution that could be provided with a short lead time, and completely installed over the school holidays while the carpark was not in use.

They required a solution that would provide parking access control, while interfacing with their existing access system for the three faculties.

PARCsafe was recommended to Coffs Harbour education campus by another education facility that had used our services.

The solution

The PARCsafe team understood the challenge faced by Coffs Harbour education campus, and were able to come back with a proposal immediately.

The complete turnkey solution featured two Velocity boom gates. Operating with just a 24V DC motor, their low power consumption and fast action made them ideal for the application. Illuminated LED lighting provides extra protection against accidental impacts from vehicles using the boom gates.

Greg Shuttleworth from the Coffs Harbour education campus  said, “We were happy with PARCsafe’s proposal and it suited what we needed.”

“They engaged our tradespeople and were able to install the boom gates at short notice while the campus was on holidays,” he said.

Importantly, the Velocity boom gates interface with the campus’ existing access control system for the uni, TAFE and secondary college, each of which has their own ID cards for the various levels of access.

“We were able to interface the three ID card systems with the gate itself,” Greg said. “With PARCsafe’s solution there was no need for new cards or anything, which would have been difficult.”

The benefits

Greg Shuttleworth said, “PARCsafe found a solution that worked with what we already had, which was important.”

The Velocity boom gates were successfully installed at short notice within the Coffs Harbour education campus’ holiday period.

“They came to us recommended by another education facility, and we found the PARCsafe team to be thorough and responsive,” Greg said. “We had a small window for installation and PARCsafe were able to achieve that and met our timeframes.”
