Alice Springs Hospital Multideck Carpark

A new multi-storey parking facility delivering much-needed on-site parking for staff, patients and visitors within the Alice Springs Hospital precinct, enhancing safety, accessibility and operational capacity.

About
this Project

The Alice Springs Hospital Multideck Carpark (MDCP) was delivered to address growing parking demand within the hospital precinct, improving access for staff, patients, and visitors while supporting the long-term operational needs of Central Australia’s primary healthcare facility. Developed by the Northern Territory Department of Health and constructed by Sunbuild, the multi-storey facility forms a critical piece of infrastructure, designed to operate reliably in a high-use, public healthcare environment.

The Challenge

As a newly delivered multideck facility, the Alice Springs Hospital MDCP needed to immediately support staff access while addressing long-standing parking constraints across the hospital precinct. Parking availability for staff was limited, and without clear guidance, users were often unsure where to park or how many spaces were available at any given time.

From day one, the site required a system that could provide clarity, improve circulation, and support efficient use of available parking without creating confusion or congestion within the new structure.

The Impacts

The lack of clear parking guidance and visibility had a direct impact on daily hospital operations. Staff regularly experienced difficulty locating available parking, leading to delays and increased frustration during peak arrival periods.

Key impacts included:

  • Staff arriving late to shifts due to time spent searching for available parking
  • Increased frustration and stress for hospital employees at the start of the day
  • Congestion within the multideck, as vehicles circulated unnecessarily while searching for spaces
  • Reduced safety, with higher vehicle and pedestrian conflict in a confined parking environment

These issues highlighted the need for a system that could actively guide drivers, improve circulation, and support a safer, more efficient parking experience from the outset.

The Solution

To address staff access and circulation challenges, the OpenSpace System was deployed throughout the multideck facility to provide real-time parking availability information. Digital displays were installed at the carpark entrance and on each ramp between floors, giving staff clear visibility of available spaces before and during circulation through the structure.

By presenting live occupancy numbers for each level, the system guides drivers directly to available parking, reducing unnecessary circulation and improving overall safety and efficiency within the multideck.

The Outcome

With the OpenSpace System in place, staff arriving at the Alice Springs Hospital MDCP now have clear, real-time visibility of parking availability across all levels. Drivers are able to make informed decisions on entry, moving directly to available spaces rather than circulating unnecessarily through the carpark.

This has significantly reduced congestion within the multideck, improved safety for both vehicles and pedestrians, and eased daily pressure on hospital staff during peak arrival times. By improving wayfinding and parking efficiency, the system supports more reliable staff access and contributes to a calmer, more predictable start to each shift.
