The Challenge
As a newly developed hospital within the growing Gregory Hills commercial precinct, The George Centre faced unique access and parking considerations from day one. The site is closely bordered by neighbouring properties, with a new school planned adjacent to the hospital, increasing the potential for traffic congestion and parking overflow during peak periods.
With car parking capacity occasionally constrained, the client required a system that could manage vehicle access efficiently, discourage misuse, and adapt to fluctuating demand as the surrounding precinct continued to develop. It was critical that the parking operation supported hospital access without negatively impacting neighbouring sites or the broader local traffic environment.
The Impacts
Without a structured access and parking management system in place from opening, the hospital would have faced increasing operational and community challenges as the surrounding precinct continued to grow. Uncontrolled parking demand and traffic spillover could have quickly undermined access to the facility during critical periods.
Potential impacts included:
- Reduced parking availability for patients and visitors due to misuse by non-hospital users within the busy commercial precinct
- Congestion at entry and exit points, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times at the neighbouring site
- Delayed access to care, increasing stress for patients, families, and clinical staff
- Strain on hospital operations, with staff required to manage parking issues reactively rather than focusing on core services
- Neighbour and community impact, including overflow parking and traffic conflicts affecting adjacent properties
By addressing these risks early, the hospital avoided the need for reactive measures post-opening and established a controlled, predictable parking environment from day one.
The Solution
To support the hospital’s operational needs while responding to the constraints of the surrounding precinct, a hybrid parking solution was implemented using the Codex System, combining license plate recognition (LPR) with traditional ticketed access.
This approach provided the flexibility required for a newly opened hospital, allowing seamless access for regular users while maintaining controlled entry for visitors during peak demand periods. The system was deployed across four vehicle lanes with a single paystation, ensuring efficient traffic flow while protecting parking availability for hospital users.
By integrating both LPR and ticketed operation, the solution enables the hospital to adapt to changing usage patterns over time, supporting future growth of the precinct while maintaining reliable, predictable access from day one.
The Outcome
The implementation of the hybrid Codex parking system enabled The George Centre to open with a controlled, efficient, and future-ready parking operation in place from day one. Vehicle access is managed effectively across the site, protecting parking availability for patients, visitors, and staff despite increasing activity within the surrounding commercial precinct.
The combination of LPR and ticketed access provides the hospital with flexibility as demand patterns evolve, ensuring the system can adapt to peak periods, neighbouring developments, and long-term growth. Traffic flow remains predictable and orderly, reducing congestion at entry and exit points and minimising impact on adjacent properties.
Overall, the solution supports a calm arrival experience for patients and families, while giving hospital operators confidence that parking access is managed proactively rather than reactively — a critical foundation for a newly established healthcare facility.
