The University of Sydney operates a number of high-demand parking facilities across its campus, including an existing car park located near the Law School. While capacity existed within the facility, drivers often lacked visibility of available parking spaces before entering, leading to uncertainty and unnecessary circulation within the campus road network. The project focused on improving driver awareness and wayfinding by providing real-time information on parking availability, allowing users to make informed decisions before committing to the car park.

Project Details

The Challenge

The primary challenge was a lack of visibility for drivers approaching the car park. Without clear information on how many bays were available, drivers were often required to enter the facility—or drive toward it—without certainty that parking was available.

This resulted in inefficient vehicle movements, with drivers circulating through already busy campus roads or diverting at the last minute, adding unnecessary congestion to surrounding areas.

The Impacts

Limited parking visibility had a broader effect on campus traffic flow and user experience. Drivers frequently experienced frustration when approaching a full or near-full car park, while others avoided the facility altogether due to uncertainty.

This lack of awareness contributed to congestion in other parts of the campus, as drivers searched for alternative parking options, increasing traffic pressure in areas not designed to handle additional vehicle volumes.

 

The Solution

An OpenSpace parking guidance system was installed to provide real-time visibility of available parking bays before drivers entered the facility. The system monitors bay availability and presents clear, easy-to-understand information to approaching drivers, enabling them to decide whether to proceed or seek alternative parking.

By shifting decision-making upstream, the solution reduces unnecessary vehicle movements and improves overall traffic efficiency within the campus.

 

The Outcome

The OpenSpace system has improved the way drivers interact with the Law School car park by providing clarity and confidence before entry. Drivers are now better informed, reducing frustration and minimising unnecessary circulation within the campus.

As a result, traffic flow around the Law School precinct has become more balanced, congestion in surrounding areas has been reduced, and the car park is used more efficiently. Overall, the solution has enhanced driver experience and supported smoother campus-wide traffic management without altering existing parking infrastructure.
