Woolworths / Primary Connect Distribution Centres

Multiple large-scale distribution and logistics facilities across Australia requiring reliable access control and internal traffic management to safely manage high volumes of heavy vehicle movements, improve site safety, and support efficient national supply chain operations.

About
this Project

Woolworths Group, through its Primary Connect logistics arm, delivered multiple new-build distribution centres across Australia to support national supply chain operations and growing freight volumes. These facilities were designed as high-capacity logistics hubs, requiring reliable internal traffic control to safely manage large volumes of heavy vehicle movements across multiple access points. Across each site, the focus was on implementing robust, scalable access control infrastructure as part of the base build, ensuring vehicle movements could be safely controlled from day one while supporting efficient, uninterrupted operations within a live logistics environment.

Project Details

The Challenge

Woolworths / Primary Connect distribution centres operate with extremely high volumes of heavy vehicle movements, requiring strict control of access across multiple truck zones and internal roadways. As new-build facilities, the challenge was to implement access control solutions that could safely manage vehicle entry and exit from day one, while preventing unauthorised access to active truck areas.

With multiple access points across each site, it was critical to ensure vehicles were directed into the correct zones, movements were predictable, and access controls could operate reliably in a demanding, high-cycle logistics environment without impacting throughput.

The Impacts

Without clearly defined access control across truck zones, new-build logistics facilities face safety, operational, and compliance risks from the outset. If left unaddressed, these risks could affect both day-to-day operations and long-term site performance.

The impacts included, or could have included:

  • Increased risk of incidents involving heavy vehicles operating across multiple access points
  • Reduced visibility and awareness of vehicle movements for staff and drivers
  • Unauthorised vehicles accessing active truck zones, increasing safety and liability risk
  • Operational inefficiencies caused by unclear traffic flow and manual intervention
  • Compliance and reputational risk in relation to workplace health and safety obligations

These risks highlighted the need for a consistent, scalable access control solution suitable for large-format, high-volume logistics sites.

The Solution

A robust and scalable access control solution was delivered using Enta boom gates installed across approximately 20 vehicle lanes spanning multiple distribution centres. Designed for everyday use, the boom gates provide reliable control of vehicle movements while supporting consistent traffic management across each site.

The solution was implemented as part of the new-build infrastructure, ensuring access control was embedded into daily operations from commissioning. High-visibility features, including LED arm lighting, support driver awareness and safe operation in all conditions.

The Outcome

The installation of Enta boom gates across Woolworths / Primary Connect distribution centres has delivered consistent, reliable control of vehicle movements across multiple sites. Truck access is now clearly managed, improving safety, reducing unauthorised access, and supporting predictable traffic flow throughout each facility.

By implementing access control as part of the base build, the sites benefit from improved operational efficiency, reduced reliance on manual intervention, and a safer working environment for staff and drivers. Overall, the solution supports scalable, compliant logistics operations aligned with Woolworths Group’s national supply chain requirements.
